Gunstock Company Aims To Recover!
Appeal Democrat Newspaper Article
Some businesses tout "fire sales," but for a Yuba City company it's not just a promotion.
The Great American Gunstock Co. on Industrial Drive has kept afloat and avoided mass layoffs after a catastrophic fire in October by selling smoke-damaged gunstocks on the Internet.
Owner Henry L. Pohl just wanted to generate cash and avoid losing trained employees — his most valuable asset, he said. He and his 12-person staff are operating mainly out of a 528-square-foot trailer, selling gunstocks that weren't damaged in the fire.
"The pressure is on — you've got to generate cash flow," said Pohl. "If not, you're ruined."
The endeavor has been going "pretty darned good," said Pohl. Overall business is at 80 percent of previous levels.
Friday afternoon, the company's phone never stopped ringing. Pohl, a silver-haired entrepreneur who was attired in cowboy boots, took call after call from customers. The company's Web site receives 400 hits a day, he said.
One economic factor that is helping the company is a falling dollar. The company is selling to a lot of customers in Canada, New Zealand and Australia because of the favorable exchange rates.
"It's really made a difference," said Pohl.
Ken Freeman, director of the Small Business Development Center on Bridge Street, can appreciate the struggle to keep a business open after a fire —he owned Feather River Mills, which burned in 1999. Freeman is working with the Great American Gunstock Co. to secure financing.
"Something like that can be overwhelming," said Freeman. "Both Henry and Brian went out there every day and went to work, and it's absolutely incredible."
Brian Sharp, the company's general manager, said it has been a struggle.
"It's really a lot of work — a lot of extra work we have to contend with along with the normal stuff, just to keep the doors open," said Sharp.
Pohl and the crew may face more hurdles. Pohl is hoping to rebuild the facility, half of which was destroyed in the fire. And he also is trying to get a Small Business Administration loan to expand into gun machining.
